Breaking Day represents how small problems in a relationship can develop into more complex ones and begin to dissolve it. A simple grudge turns to a confrontation and from there it breaks apart. The set (014) is the basic building block, or grundgestalt, of the entire work and grows with each movement.
I. Grudges
- Unwilling to let go of previous events or confrontations resentment is sustained in the relationship. Harbored deeply and safe inside the inability of release it is free to feed and grow.
II. Vitriol
– The grudge has grown in severity and creates an argument between the couple. Caustic words are released in the confrontation and the brief encounter threatens the security of the relationship. Both sides get their say and are extreme and unrelenting.
III. Schism
– The harbored resentment has turned to anger. The anger has turned to uncontrolled outbursts of hate from both sides. Feelings are now too complex to define. There is no turning back – the relationship must be broken.
